Historic Lie Cabin Moved

The cabin of Aslak O. Lie, Norwegian immigrant and well known furniture maker, located near Klevenville, in Springdale Township, was dismantled, moved and will be restored at Folklore Village near Ridgeway. The cabin, which is a rare example of ethnically influenced architecture, will remain on the National Register of Historic Places even after its move. Folklore Village's mission includes providing ethnic programming and keeping folk arts, music and history alive in Southern Wisconsin. The Mt. Horeb Historical Society commends the organization's efforts to save this historic structure.

If you would like to learn more about Aslak O. Lie, his prolific furniture manufacturing business and architectural accomplishments in southwestern Dane County, visit the Mt. Horeb Area Museum, where several pieces of his work are exhibited along with photos and informative text. There are also several pieces attributed to Lie in the Museum's study collections, as well as information in the Archives. The library contains a recently published book on Lie's life which features six pieces in the Historical Society's holdings. For access to these stored collections contact one of the curators for an appointment.
